Managing Late Work

Deadlines are an important part of life – both in and out of the classroom.  I accept late work, but would often times find myself spending a lot of extra time managing the random assignment that trickle in.  In order to manage these late assignments, and in an effort to keep my students more accountable, I’ve now developed a two-step approach.

1.  All major assignments come with a “production deadline”.  If you submit your assignment by the deadline, you get the points.  For some reason, this feels better for me rather than “taking off” points for a late assignment.  (I do realize it’s the SAME thing though.)

2.  I’ve created a late work submission form.  I like having all late assignment notifications in one place (rather than random student emails/Schoology messages) and it gives me an easy way to see the number of times a student has submitted late work.  Plus, when students send me random messages, I don’t always get the information I need (what period are you in, why was it late, what’s the name of the assignment, etc.).
