Feeling Through

Hey! Just thought I’d share what I’m showing my kids this week. They’re watching this short film and we’re discussing representation, disability, community, their own perspective as an ASL student… but the one prompt that I give them before they watch is “who is God working through in this (true) story?” They’ve been incredibly insightful and I’m glad I’m able to have these discussions with them. Feel free to watch!

I’m excited to receive reflection papers from my juniors and seniors. One of my sophomore girls contributed this:

“God was working through Artie. Artie was sent by God to be a guardian angel. He is an example of the Holy Spirit. He wasn’t what Tareek wanted at that moment, but that hug at the end shows that he was what God knew he needed.”

  1. Kristin,
Thanks for sharing this film! I would agree with your sophomore student – God was definitely working through Artie. It's interesting that she saw him as a guardian angel!
I also saw God working through the interaction between Tereek and the bus driver. Even though Tereek had just recently met Artie, he wanted to make sure he was taken care of. And he was able to convey his concern to the bus driver.
I was also struck by how cheerful Artie was. This was his life – he accepted it – and just lived it. Makes me rethink all the complaining I do sometimes!

  2. Kristen, can I start with a WOW, just WOW! I waited to comment for a couple weeks after reading as I shared this short film with family and friends. I have also begun the rabbit hole that Omeleto offers. I hadn't heard of the platform and how it strives to offer authentic, human experiences in small, manageable chunks. Something I am aiming for in writing instruction in my English classes. I have watched about five Omeleto films so far and I am blown away by the offerings. All with one goal: Empathy through living life through the experience of another. Thank you so much for introducing me to Omeleto!

  3. This was amazing- so glad I stumbled on your post and watched. I love that this was shared with your classes and that the students were engaged and full of conversation!
